Major Accomplishments

Since its founding as a group of concerned property owners in 1984, SPONY has become a prominent organization representing the unique interests of small property owners in New York.

• Instrumental in establishing Owner's Tables at housing court, which provide information to small owners representing themselves in court and provide a well needed balance to blatantly anti-owner information proffered by other groups.

• SPONY members have spoken at every Rent Guidelines Board hearing.

• SPONY has filed amicus curiae (friend-of-the-court) briefs in six court cases dealing with housing matters before New York State Supreme Court.

• SPONY's tireless efforts have led to a change of rhetoric in public policy discussions about housing in City Hall and elsewhere. The particular challenges facing smaller owners are now at least being acknowledged by city government.

Beyond these accomplishments, our most important achievements occur at every membership meeting. Owners share and receive information that directly affects their business and solves some of their most vexing problems.
